Insurance Requirements in California – Motorcycle

Motorcycle Insurance

California Vehicle Code applies to motorcycle owners and operators as well. Minimum liability insurance, also known as financial responsibility required by law on all vehicles operated or parked on California roadways.

Minimum Required Liability Insurance Limits
$15,000 Bodily injury/death to one person.
$30,000 Bodily injury/death to more than one person.
$5,000 for damage to property.

The above limits will satisfy the law and get you on the road legally, but we strongly recommend choosing a liability limit that would protect your assets in case of a bodily injury or property damage claim.

Additional coverage options that can be added to your motorcycle insurance policy to increase your protection while on the road or away from your bike.

Medical Payments

Helps you cover the medical payments of the policyholder. Available limits from $1,000 to $10,000. No deductible applies.

Uninsured Motorist

Helps you pay for damage caused by an identified uninsured or underinsured motorist. Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist limits cannot exceed the policy liability limits.

Helps you pay for damages other than collisions such as fire, theft, vandalism and falling objects.

Pays for damages caused by colliding with another vehicle or object.

Both comprehensive and collision coverage have deductibles. Deductibles start at $50, and we recommend going up to $1,000 depending on the value of your motorcycle. A deductible is your responsibility portion before the insurance company gets involved with damages on your bike. For example, if you choose a $500 deductible on your motorcycle insurance policy, the insuring company will pay you for costs over $500. Anything below $500 will be your responsibility.

Uninsured Motorist Property Damage

This coverage pays for damage to the insured vehicle if it is involved in an accident with an identified uninsured motorist. UMPD pays a maximum of $3,500 toward either the repair costs or the value of the vehicle if it is a total loss.

Uninsured Motorist Collision Deductible Waiver

If you have Collision coverage, you can add the Uninsured Motorist Collision Deductible Waiver to your policy. When an identified uninsured motorist damages your vehicle, your collision deductible will be rinbursed.

Accessory Coverage

Always enter the TOTAL value of Accessory Coverage on the bike or ATV. Most insurance companies do not charge for the first $3,000 of Accessory Coverage. Accessory Coverage may be purchased on a motorcycle when Comprehensive Coverage or Comprehensive and Collision is selected. Accessory coverage provides physical damage protection to additional equipment, devices, accessories, and enhancements. Other than those which are original manufacturer installed.

Please Note: You must retain receipts for accessories. Insurance companies also recommended that you keep photos of the motorcycle.
